A Passaic Class Monitor - USS Weehawken
Scale: 1/96th - Resin & Metal Parts
Old Steam's Passaic Kit is the feature of an article in the Nov-Dec issue of Seaways Ships In Scale!
OSN-18: The Weehawken was one of a class of ten single-turreted monitors, which were ordered built directly after the great success of the Monitor in its battle with the CSS Virginia. The fleet of monitors, known as the Passaic Class, were larger than the first Monitor and differed from her in one very important point: the pilot house was built above the top of the turret. The Passaic class was also armed with heavier guns. Most carried one XI-inch Dahlgren and one XV-inch Dahlgren smoothbore guns. The Passiac's were 200 feet long and 45 feet broad. Other Passaic Class monitors built were the Patapsco, the Montauk, the Passaic, the Catskill, the Nantucket, the Nahant, the Lehigh, and the Sangamon.
Old Steam Navy's kit used Stereolithography (a laser) to cut the master pattern. This kit is in 1/96th scale and is made of resin and white metal/pewter parts. Each part is individually cast, and the use of the laser produces stunning historically correct detail. The interior of the turret contains all the parts necessary to produce a detailed cut-away version that matches the historical blueprints. The interior is now cast in all white metal. We also went to great length and expense to use historical blueprints to make the XV-Inch Dahlgren and matching gun carriage. To our knowledge, Old Steam's XV-Inch Dahlgren is the only gun in this scale in the world. The kit also includes 64 "Amati" two-ball brass stanchions, Old Steam Navy spun cast white metal flagpoles, turret stanchions, sheaves, cleats, warping chocks, etc. We also include two Old Steam Navy life boats and even the canopy that sat on top of the turret. Fifteen color pages of history and instructions are provided. They include historical blueprints, photographs, and wood etchings, to aid you in the kits construction and to tell the fantastic historical story of the Weehawken's service. The new 2005 version of the Weehawken has a one piece deck which is 25 inches in length and 5.75 incheswide. The hull has been remade and is also one piece. Look at what we will do to wow our customers.

A Year on a Monitor and the Destruction of Fort Sumter
Alvah Hunter
In November of 1862 Alvah Hunter, then a youth of sixteen, signed on as a ship's boy aboard the the Passaic class monitor "Nahant." His year's service aboard the warship allowed the young man to witness, among other things, the abortive April, 1863 Union attack on Fort Sumter, the capture of the Confederate ironclad ram "Atlanta", and the naval and military actions against Battery Wagner and Morris Island. Hunter kept a diary, it recorded such vivid entries. Civil War scholars at all levels will rejoice in this worthy addition to the literature.

Old Steam Navy Lifeboat
OSN-20: Recently our German importer of lifeboats refused "to sell anything in the USA again." So our thought was to hell with this guy, we'll just make our own and make them in Texas! So we turned to the blueprints from the USS Mississippi and had our CAD guy make this boat in 1/96th scale and we cast it in resin. We choose to do it in resin so its light enough not to sag white metal stanchions. This boat is authentic down to every detail and was done in the clinker style. No one else has anything this good. Click on the picture of the plans to see our photo of the lifeboat. SKU:OSN-20 $12.95
