USS Vindicator
OSNSP - 008 - USS Vindicator:
Prior to her building, Charles Ellet had converted civilian vessels into fast unarmed rams manned by civilian volunteers for use on the Mississippi River against Confederate ironclads during the Civil War, After their success at Memphis it was decided to create two purpose built rams for use by the Union Navy. Their names were Vindicator and Avenger. As with earlier rams, a huge fore & aft bulkhead divided the hold in two and ran its length. In these new rams an improved hull was designed for high speed with an extremely pointed bow and a hexagonal cross section with side points at the waterline. Huge boilers and engines gave Vindicator an astounding speed of 13 mph upstream and 20 mph downstream. She participated in the Yazoo River campaign and in the chase of the CSS Webb in April 1865 as that vessel attempted to escape to the sea. The Vindicator and Avenger were armed with a 100 pounder pivot rifle on their fantail as well as several 24 pounders.
The package will contain two 11" x 17" sheets containing the 1/192 model building instructions, three 8 1/2" x 11" sheets with six 5"x7" color images of my completed model, three 8 1/2" x 11" sheets with copies of the only 3 NH photos on record. One 8 1/2" x 11" sheet with the entire vessel dimensions, armament, displacement, construction features and brief history.

Union Mortar Raft
Detailed plans for building an HO Scale model of these unique Civil War craft are offered by "Old Steam Navy". The plans package includes description of HO scale artillery figures as well as details on the scratch building of a 13 inch mortar. Contemporary engravings and photos are included as well as several color photos of the author's model. These vessels, used for seige bombardment in many Civil War campaigns, were fortified, floating platforms supporting mortar cannon and crew. The crew maneuvered the rafts, that steamboats had previously towed upstream, with the two long sweeps as they drifted past the target. Once in range, a crew lit the fuse to fire the mortar, then took shelter from the concussion on the triangular decks outside the oak and boiler plate enclosure. Plans drawn by Ed Parent. The plans can easily be converted into 1/32nd scale via magification via the copier. Mortar rafts were used at Island No. 10, Battle of New Orleans,

CSS LOUISIANA
OSNSP - 010 CSS Louisiana was one of two large casemated ironclads laid down in New Orleans in late 1861 for use on the Mississippi River. Designed and built by Edward C. Murray, she was hastily constructed but still incomplete with insufficient crew, no deck armor, or propeller engines, in April, 1862 when she was commissioned and towed downstream to be used as a floating battery tied to the river bank to defend Confederate forts threatened by advancing Union forces. Soldiers from the forts were transferred to Louisiana to handle the guns. Workmen remained on board to complete the vessel. Her two tandem centerline paddle wheels were unsuccesful in moving the vessel upstream. Engines for the twin screws to be used for steering were not ready. During one of the brief engagements with passing Federal vessels her captain, Commander McIntosh, was killed. After later surrender of the Confederate forst, Louisian was set on fire and exploded to prevent capture. These plans were drawn by our expert Ed Parent the author of many articles in Ships N Scale and other model magazines and publications.
