12 Pound Bronze Napoleon - 1857 ModelNamed for Napoleon III, who grasped the logistical weakness of mixed batteries and conceived a mobile gun to replace both light guns and howitzers. He determined that batteries would become more effective if every weapon were the same and could fire the same ammunition. The 12 pound Napoleon was intended to shoot the spherical case shot or shell of a howitzers, the solid round shot of guns or the canister for either of them. The gun was capable of hoizontal or "direct" fire of the gun or the curved or "indirect" fire of the howitzer. The '1857' model was the foremost fieldpiece of the Civil War. The gun was capable of throwing a projectile 1,600 yards; however canister was its favorite charge. Used by both North and South.
